Mobile Gaming

Mobile Gaming

Mobile Gaming over many years have advanced in technology. same as the gaming consoles and personal computer but there are always people who would choose the portable gaming option over any other gaming media because its portable, it gives user a greater option to play games and have more freedom when playing. and the following blog is going to show a time line of the mobile gaming and how it evolved.

In November 1979

Microvision Handheld device
Milton Bradley released one of the first handheld gaming devices back in 1979 with the Microvision and this portable gaming unt was the first unit to use interchangeable cartridges and this same interchanable cartridge system was used by early Gaming consoles and this just shows how far technology had progressed from the gaming consoles, and this first handheld gaming unit was catching up to the technology used by modern gaming consoles in its day.

The Microvision gaming unit was created by a man called Jay Smith, and the technology adavancment in this gaming unit was very small for example the memory system of the gaming unit used 32 nibbles (16 bytes) RAM, 2K ROM and this was very limited and very small to the gaming console being made at the same time, also the resolution of the screen was even smaller and used a 16 x 16 resolution screen and was very simple but small and difficult to read at times using a Dot as the characters movement.

and because of the porrly made screen, the screen would sometimes rot where the LCD display would leak and this just showed how limited this portable gaming unit was.

In 1981

Entex Select
The Entex Select A Game Machine was released in 1981, but was rather large. It was designed for two players to participate and soon became the first portable gaming unit to which layers could play against other players. The machine contained a vacuum fluorescent display It could display two colors, red and blue. These were combined with static overlays for each game. Together they made the display.  and this type of display caused some users to occur bad eye sight and some other problems and because of this issue, it caused the portable gaming unit to discontinue. also

And when comparing this to the previous portable gaming unit, these simple machines were having some difficulty in making the screen without any issues and this was because, screen technology was only just starting to evolve with the introducion of the new screens for the home gaming consoles etc.

In the late 1980's

Game And Watch
In the late 1980's Nintendo introduced there portable gaming unit called the Game and Watch system. Game and Watch features a single game to be played on an LCD screen in addition to a clock and an alarm system to wake people up when needed.

This simple design was also limited because it was only sold wih one game and to play more games you would have to buy another seperate unit with a different game and in total this devices was sold with more than 50 different games all being successful in the home gaming console and arcade units around the world. during this decade of portable gaming these devices were over stepping both home gamig consoles and personal computers on the capabilites

Balloon fight game
Donky Kong game
Some of the games that could be played on this devices were Mikey Mouse, Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. being so successful in the home gaming console, Nintendo later sore the oppurtunity to incorperate this successful game in to the portable devices.

And in doing this is later set the bench mark for portable gaming to come in the future because 20 years later Nintendo used the same designe of the Game and Watch system which uses 2 screen display and now use that design in there latest gaming unit the Nintendo DS.

In late 1989

Nintendo Gameboy With sound enhancement unit
Nintendo Gameboy
Nintendo later released a better and powerfuler unit predocessing the Game and Watch devices and was called the Gameboy. and this new devices for portable gaming later revolutionized portable gaming since, any user could play up to 36 hours on the devices, making it one of the longest lasting gaming units in the market at the time, it also used cartridge based games also taken from the idea of the home gaming consoles, and the first ever designed portable gaming unit the Microvision which used cartridge based games.

Light and Color versions were later released in the 1990’s. With the upgrades made to the line, it became one of the longest running video game systems in history.

This new portable gaming unit later sore it sell over 100 million copies world wide and in some cases had graphic quality of some of the first home gaming consoles yet it the graphic quality was made to fit in to a devices no bigger than length of a himan hand. and just showed how far portable gaming units hade became in the future and compared to its predocessors.

during this decade of portable gaming these devices were over stepping both home gamig consoles and personal computers on the capabilites for example ths consoles was out matching some if not all gaming consoles that were out at the present time, and could do much more capabilites with the gaming than the home consoles could, and comparing this devices to the personal computer it was out matching computers on the basis of the number of games that could be played, the fact that the devices was portabe giving gamers are more sense of freeddom rather than playing at home on there home consoles, and the features that were involved with the device compared to the personal computer.

N-Gage
Late 1990's

itouch device
During the late 1990's Nokia and Apple later sore the success of the portable gaming market and soon made portable gaming units called the Ngage by Nokia and the Itouch by Apple, these devices sore the revolutionized 3D gaming and soon out passed some of the gaming consoles in its decade, ad also had the introduction of wireless gaming and motion controlls and later enhanced the technology and users interactions with portable gaming with the use of motion control of some games.

The introduction of the N-Gage Nokia devices later used the device of a phone and portable gaming unit in one because nokia sore that most peopl would carry a phone and portabel gaming unit. also revolutionized multiplater gaming with the introduction of bluetooth gaming which allowed users to play each other over a bluetooth connection which was built in to the device, also used the use of internet to play other players over the internet.

During this decade the rtwo devices described above out matched both computer and home consoles in technology and features for example the itouch devices could do multiple things, it had an app store which allowed the user to download many games to his or her choosing and also being at an affordable prices nearly anyone could afford to buy this devices and play the games on them, also 3D graphic quality was out matching the consoles and computer but sooner in the years computers would soon become the devices which was best for gamers and having the best graphics available.

thanks to the introduction of prtable gaming devices these devices could also be upgrade with the use of software updates provided by the company but the hardware was still limited because this could be upgrade, and during this decade not even home consoles could upgrade there software capabilites because not all consoles could be connected to the internet and not all homes had internet so this was very limited for gaming consoles.

and also because of the motion controller unit inside the apple devices it gave the use rbetter interactions with the game making it more popular than both the computer and game consoles. computers were by far lacking in this technology and always will do because the sheer bulk and size of a computer, you carnt add motion movement unless hardware devices were released and at the time these devices never existed making the computer very limited compared to the portable gaming unit.

PSP
In the early 2000's Nintendo and Sony with the rise in the home console market soon released two devcies called the PSP devices and soon upgrade that device to the PS Vita and Nintendo also released there Nintendo DS and 3DS devices which soon set the bench mark for portable gaming to come.

Nintendo DS
These two devices were so technologically advanced they matched both the home gaming consoles in graphic wise and the type of games that could be played in these devices. for example the PSP used a form of disc that could be placed inside the PSP and the device reads the dics so basically this devices was a smaller version of there home consoles, and Nintendo DS also used a duel screen display which allowed for the user to see 2 different aspects of the game and could use one screen as the interactins and the other screen as a map type system depending on the game used.
